Show VAT separately on invoices
Most countries require net, VAT amount, and gross as separate line items. Combining them can lead to penalties.

VAT-registered? Reclaim on purchases
Use excl. VAT mode to find the net amount on any business purchase. That's the amount you can reclaim.

Know your registration threshold
You only need to charge VAT once you hit the threshold. €20k in NL, £90k in the UK. Below that, it's optional.

What is VAT
The short version, for people
who just want the number

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a consumption tax applied to most goods and services, collected in stages from production through to the final sale. As a business owner or freelancer, you will encounter it in two directions: adding VAT when you invoice, and removing VAT to find the net price when you receive a gross amount.

The rate varies by country, and in some countries by product type. Most EU countries sit between 19% and 25%. Once you are VAT-registered, you charge it to clients and pay the collected amount to your tax authority, typically quarterly.

Adding VAT Gross = Net × (1 + rate)
Removing VAT Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate)
FAQ
Common questions
Excl. VAT (net) is the base price before tax. The amount you earn as income. Incl. VAT (gross) is the total the customer actually pays. When quoting to other businesses you typically quote net. When selling to consumers, prices are usually shown gross.
Select Incl. VAT mode in the calculator above, enter the gross amount, and the net will appear as the main result. The formula is: Net = Gross ÷ (1 + rate). For example, €121 at 21% VAT gives a net of €100 and a VAT amount of €21. A common mistake is simply multiplying the gross by the rate. This gives the wrong answer.
Only once you exceed your country's VAT registration threshold. In the Netherlands this is €20,000 annual turnover, in the UK it is £90,000. Below the threshold, registering for VAT is optional. Above it, registration is mandatory and you must charge VAT on your invoices and file regular returns.
Yes, if you are VAT-registered. The VAT you pay on business expenses (software, equipment, services) can be deducted from the VAT you owe. Use the Incl. VAT mode on any purchase receipt to find the reclaimable amount. Keep your invoices. You will need them when filing.
Most services and standard goods use the standard rate for your country. Reduced rates typically apply to food, books, medicine, and certain cultural services. Some things are zero-rated or exempt entirely. If you are unsure, check your country's tax authority website or speak to an accountant. The rate field in the calculator above accepts any custom percentage.
A valid VAT invoice must show the net amount, the VAT rate and amount, and the gross total as separate line items. You also need to include your VAT registration number, the invoice date, and the client's details. Merging the amounts without showing the breakdown is generally not accepted for tax purposes.
